Quantum Speed - On Current Hardware - Wins The A.I. Energy Race
Speed always wins because only speed delivers new outcomes
The entire tech world is locked in a race to deliver new, currently impossible computing outcomes.
The race is between speed - quantum speeds - versus size - massive data centers - so large they are measured in acres, not square feet.
The quantum speed team knows speed always wins, so they are designing computers with different physics - delivering hundreds to thousands of times current compute speeds.
The size team - exhausted by trying to squeeze more electrons through a chip - are building data centers ever larger - spending literally a trillion dollars or more - to make up with girth what they cannot obtain with speed.
The quantum speed team faces the obdurate hurdle of needing equipment and instructions nobody but a science geek can operate.
The size team faces the equally burdensome hurdle of energy - there is not energy enough to power many more data centers - and citizen groups are beginning to win fights to stop data centers ruining their rural landscapes.
Quantum speed - what is it?
How about taking any current application and running it from a thousand times faster to maybe even a million times faster?
Why is quantum speed being chased by every Wall Street firm, the United States Department of Defense, every A.I. company and 3 Chinese Communist tech orgs?
Any application that runs 1,000 times faster will deliver outcomes impossible with current technology - particularly A.I.
The future will be defined by “outcomes.”
The future is about delivering applications so fast some outcomes are unimaginable today.
Speed, speed, speed always prevails in technology.
The size team hit the physics wall about pushing more electrons, faster, through those chips - but they shouldn’t have thrown in the towel.
While chips aren’t getting that much faster, or smaller, which is the same thing, maybe software can be made to run faster.
Why is quantum speed - on current hardware - so elusive?
For 40 years, engineers made computers faster and faster - by making chips smaller and smaller. Then they hit the limit, the wall.
Nobody did much to make software faster.
Read that again - software today runs at about the same speed it did a decade ago - maybe incrementally faster, but NOT QUANTUM FASTER.
Make an application run 20% faster - that’s incremental.
Make software run 1,000 or more times faster - your outcome horizons change.
How fast is software?
Software operates as fast as it can process an I/O wait state.
If you can impact I/O wait states - reducing them dramatically, software runs about 1,000 times faster.
The A.I. energy challenge is not going to be overcome with more data centers - even though today 99.9999% of all computer literate people disagree.
They don’t really disagree - they just haven’t thought through the full implications of reducing I/O wait states to such a degree a data center is eliminated - or it can remain - doing 1,000 times the work without appreciably more energy.
That is sustainable computing - which we discuss at TheSustainableComputingInitiative.com.
That’s why you need to follow this newsletter - you will read material here - backed with live demos and real customers - you will NEVER read in the tech press.

Here is the man bites dog story - and you did not read it in the Wall Street Journal, Crunchbase or any of the tech pubs like Wired - because they report what almost everyone blindly believes - build more data centers.
The current A.I. energy challenge will be overcome with quantum speed software - that does not need quantum hardware.
Run any application on any current computer at quantum speed and the need for ever-growing data centers vanishes.
Or, as the Fractal guys are now hearing from the data center crowd - if their data centers can be made to run 1,000 times faster - thus 1,000 times the throughput WITHOUT CORRESPONDING ENERGY INCREASES - they will own the world.
They don’t have to build more data centers - each one becomes 1,000 times more valuable - they did the math.
We agree. Great insight. New friends in the data center world.
Quantum speed delivers outcomes not possible with current computing technology - period.
One of those outcomes is you do not need lots of new data centers if any one of them can be made 1,000 times more efficient by impacting I/O wait states.
When applications run 1,000 times faster, they need 1/1000th the hardware.
When applications need 1/1000th the hardware - they only consume 1/1000th the energy.
America has that energy NOW!
And they deliver outcomes nobody can currently grasp - with all the data centers in the world.
Quantum speed means any A.I. application runs from 1,000 to a million times faster - and if properly distributed, perhaps faster still. Such speed means massively larger A.I. models, greater fidelity, results which the world’s largest data center cannot deliver.
Every current data center runs today’s conventional technology - the current obsolete techs like Oracle, VMware, SAP, Palantir and other 1980s technologies built to run HR and billing systems.
There is a golden rule in software: You cannot run faster than your infrastructure - so you can build 100 data centers and they will ALL operate at the same speed as ANY ONE of them.
That speed is the length of an I/O wait state, times the number of transactions, pretty much.
It’s like having two wagons and hooking up 100 horses to one and 2 horses to the other - they each operate at the speed of the slowest horse.
If one wagon could operate hundreds of times faster, different outcomes would be possible - which Henry Ford proved and is too obvious for comment.
If you doubt for a second that speed is the ultimate disruptor - just think back about the U.S. Department of Defense types turning white with fear and surprise when the Ruskies let loose a hypersonic missile.
In that moment, everything changed - everything.
When the market grasps the outcomes possible with reduced I/O wait states - which Fractal demonstrates every week - everything - yes, everything will change.
Speed, speed, speed always wins.
Want to see an outcome nobody can economically deliver with conventional tech?
Here is a short video of the Fractal Dark Money System - tracking every NGO - 10 years back, and every relationship, - money in, money out, people, phones, addresses with any other NGO done instantly on a computer the size of 2 iPhones.
Do not email me that you can do this in your basement - because one of the largest, most prominent tech companies getting sole source bids from the current Administration called us because they saw this video and couldn’t come close to doing it.
They still can’t - and they have data centers all over the place.
Nor can the U.S. Government with all its compute power - we know because they told us.
We do it on a 4 inch computer, plugged into a wall at an engineer’s house in Austin.
You - if you watched the video - you just saw quantum speed, on current hardware, on a computer using the power of a table lamp.
You can see our other demonstration projects on The FractalGovernment.com.
For those of you engaged with us, you regularly witness live applications operating at speeds unimaginable with current technology - and we are moving forward together in a number of markets.
We demonstrated MESH computing capabilities - the ability to aggregate any number of computers into an A.I. MESH, creating the world’s largest super computer if someone had the right permissions.
There are other outcomes - and they are even more elusive - one of them is in the IoT world.
Rather than make you read what Fractal enables in IoT, let us say there is no current database technology - other than Fractal - that can handle the real time ingestion of trillions of records from sensors, meters, devices - and Fractal due to quantum speed and some pretty cool ETL stuff inside (extract, transform and load - it means making databases with different sources, structures and formats play well together - at quantum speed) - Fractal can easily scale to meet IoT demands (without a data center).
Rather than making you read, here is a short video on how Fractal, using quantum speed on current hardware - enables databases far too large for Oracle - to be run - at quantum speed, without a data center.

So who needs one of those?
Well, for sure the Department of Defense - the one in the U.S. and from what we hear, its equivalent in China.
We don’t have spies or anything, we know that Fractal guys aren’t the only clever guys on the planet - and some boys in China are into this I/O optimization thing - and aren’t far behind us.
The Chinese and we are cracking the I/O optimization code and while the tech press will not listen to us when we publish live examples of quantum speed on current hardware, we bet they will get sobered up when the Chinese do it.
Remember Deep Seek?
Wait until China does a demo showing - not a small data center - but through I/O optimization, no data center at all. Watch LinkedIn the following week as data center after data center construction projects are cancelled.
We are gratified by the potential partners coming to Fractal from this newsletter.
We are getting traction in the utility space, energy, some government stuff, payment processing, medical billing and some very interesting DoD chats.
Quantum speed, on current hardware is here - there are live customers, there are hundreds of applications running - and speed, ALWAYS wins in the end. Always, no exceptions.
Disruptive speed will ALWAYS prevail over capital, market share, numbers of customers and pals in the government giving out no bid contracts.
Since Fractal delivers outcomes the obsolete tech vendors cannot dream of delivering, this story’s outcome is certain - and that is likely why three hedge fund guys call us from time to time about when we are going to do a national story - because they are buying puts - it’s a stock option thing - buying puts on one or two of these dinosaur tech companies with stratospheric multiples.
So stay with us here, there are a lot of new announcements coming and we are probably going to do a live webinar showing some quantum speed applications, that need a data center, running on an an Apple laptop or an Intel NUC or something - we will announce it here.
We are writing the epitaph of who wins the compute race - it will be quantum speed, on current hardware, and it is an idea which cannot be held back much longer.
FractalComputing Substack is a newsletter about the journey of taking a massively disruptive technology to market. We envision a book about our journey so each post is a way to capture some fun events.
